1st time promotion to Manager/Supervisor

One of the most common questions we’re asked at CAC is how candidates can improve their chances of securing a Manager-level position with direct supervisory responsibilities for the first time.

Many companies seeking to fill Manager-level roles prefer candidates who already have supervisory experience. This creates a catch-22 for experienced Senior Accountants or Senior Financial Analysts: you can't get supervisory experience without a Manager role, and you can't get a Manager role without supervisory experience.

However, there are several steps you can take to position yourself for success.

Start by exploring opportunities within your current employer. It might seem counterintuitive for a recruiter to suggest staying put, but don’t overlook internal options. Transitioning to a Manager role within your current company can be easier because you can leverage your credibility, historical performance, achievements, relationships, and knowledge of systems and processes.

Here are some tips for progressing internally:

Communicate your desire for advancement to your Manager or Supervisor. Ensure they're aware of your career aspirations and discuss succession planning.

  • Ask if there are duties or responsibilities they can delegate to you.
  • Volunteer for projects or initiatives with a leadership element.
  • Offer to oversee or manage interns or co-op students.
  • Volunteer as a CFE mentor or participate in other mentorship programs.
  • Inquire about leadership courses or training offered by your employer.

If you've exhausted all internal resources, consider these external steps:

  • Pursue education opportunities, courses, or training programs with a leadership focus. Your employer may cover some or all of the costs involved.
  • Volunteer for extracurricular positions with leadership responsibilities.
  • Take on leadership roles in any clubs, teams, or organizations you are involved in.

What's crucial is to maximize the value of your skills, experiences, and accomplishments. Make sure to showcase them in your resume and highlight them effectively during interviews.

What’s absolutely critical is that you leverage as much value as possible from your skills, experiences, and accomplishments.

You must ensure that you showcase them in your resume. You must also be in a position to highlight them effectively during an interview.

Speak with your CAC representative, they can provide guidance and help support your transition to Manager level.
